Congratulations! You've received a diagnosis. Now what?
Getting a diagnosis can be a battle that lasts years. Once it's finally over we are often relived and ready to face new challenges. For many of us there is no guide from doctors to welcome us into our new lives. We find ourselves alone and lost, unsure how to proceed. This was the case for me. My doctor wouldn't even explain to me the condition he had just diagnosed me with never mind how to proceed as a severely ill individual. With the little energy I had I tried to find what services were available to help me manage my illness and obtain financial support. I wasn't very successful and my health declined to the point were I struggled to meet my own daily needs.
Years have passed and I have improved enough to share some of what I have learned myself and from others. This site is for Yukoner's who are finding themselves in the same position I was once in. It will change as services change, appear and disappear. I understand how exhausting having a chronic condition is, along with the brain fog that accompanies it, so I have tried to lay everything out as clearly and consistently as possible. Each service has a description of what they offer, who they offer it to, where they are located with contact information, and a cost estimate of their services.
How to use this site.
The Resource pages will contain a contact list of services, public and private, that we have found in the Yukon, Whitehorse and the communities. Each listing will include a description of services, who those services are offered to, their contact information and a cost estimate. Costs will be indicated as free, $ = up to $100, and $$ = above $100. This feature may be simplified in the future.
The Calendar (as of yet not created) will contain events/workshops from the different services. If you would like your groups events posted here please let me know.
The Blog will contain more indepth descriptions of local services and resources in town as well as helpful advice. If you would like to contribute to this site please contact me.
Our Stories is a place to feel seen and heard. (Once created) It will contain interviews from Yukoner's with chronic conditions who share what it was like getting their diagnosis, the challenges they faced before and after, what their experiences where like as they searched for resources and answers, and any advice they may have for others going through similar situations.
*This site is under construction and constantly expanding and updating so it is a good idea to periodically check back in. Please be patient as this is a one woman show with a debilitating chronic health issue. If you find any faulty information or have a service you would like to add please let me know by contacting me through email at nosoordinaryca@gmail.com. Thank you to my friends and family who have contributed and given me the encouragement to make this happen.
A special thank you to YukonStruct and TechYukon for their support in this endeavour.
